Layer 02 · Pre-Publication Legal Checklist
Run this before ANY article goes live. If you fail ANY item → do not publish yet.
Evidence Check
Do I have proof or credible sources?
Every claim must be substantiated.
Can I justify every claim if challenged?
Imagine defending each sentence in court.
Language Check
Avoid stating guilt as fact
Use "Allegations of fraud have been raised" — not "They committed fraud".
Safe language framework applied
"It is alleged…", "Sources indicate…", "Documents reviewed suggest…"
Balance Check
Have I contacted the other side?
Right of Reply must be offered.
Did I give reasonable time to respond?
Minimum 48 hours.
Public Interest Test
Does this expose wrongdoing?
Not gossip or private matters.
Does this protect the public?
There must be a public benefit.
Is this more than gossip?
If no — do not publish.
Harm Check
Could this unfairly damage someone innocent?
Proportionality check.
Have I anonymised where needed?
Especially for private individuals and victims.
Timestamp & Transparency
Added 'Last Updated'?
All articles must carry a timestamp.
Added Corrections section?
Even if none yet — the infrastructure must exist.
Layer 03 · Editorial Red Lines
This is where people get into trouble. No exceptions.
Do Not: State allegations as facts
Always frame correctly — 'it is alleged' not 'they did'.
Do Not: Publish without Right of Reply
This is your biggest legal shield — never skip it.
Do Not: Name individuals without strong evidence
Especially private individuals. Evidence threshold is higher.
Do Not: Use emotional / aggressive language
No "disgusting", no "corrupt" unless proven. Stay neutral.
Do Not: Guess or fill gaps
If you don't know → don't say it.
Safe Language Framework
This is how real investigative outlets write. These phrases carry legal weight.
It is alleged that…
Sources indicate…
Documents reviewed suggest…
According to evidence obtained…
The organisation was approached for comment…
